The Circle of Courage

The Circle of Courage model is a philosophy rooted in resilience, science and positive youth development which identifies four universal needs that are essential for children to thrive.

Belonging – Independence – Generosity – Mastery

When these needs are met, children are more likely to develop into healthy, resilient individuals.
The circle depicts the interconnectedness of these needs and the cyclical nature of growth and development.
It emphasizes a strengths-based approach, focusing on identifying and nurturing a child’s strengths rather than dwelling on their weaknesses.

Belonging

This need involves a sense of connection, support, and acceptance from others. It’s about feeling valued and part of a group or community.

If you asked any of the kids what the feeling of belonging is, they all would say it feels like a family.

“Can’t we come here all the time?”- Mahli

Independence

This need is about having autonomy, making choices, and taking responsibility for one’s actions. It’s about developing self-reliance and a sense of control over one’s life.

Kids call it “owning your own sh*t”. Taking responsibility for your action and having a say about what’s happening in your life.

“Even with your mates”– Taj

Generosity

This need is about caring for others, contributing to the community, and having empathy. It’s about being kind, helpful, and concerned for the well-being of others.

Helping bushfire and flood victims in our community with fencing, cleaning up and mowing.

“It’s good to help” – Jack

Mastery

This need is about having the opportunity to learn, develop skills, and achieve competence in various areas. It’s about feeling capable and confident in one’s abilities.

From P plates to putting up fencing, welding or picking up a pencil and writing their name. We don’t care what it looks like.
